Some Tips on How to Play the Piano by Ear

Posted by admin on January 27th, 2009

You have always loved the sound of the piano and you remember tinkering on it as a child. You never had the money to afford formal lessons and you can’t read sheet music. But you want to play. How..?

You have always loved the sound of the piano and you remember tinkering on it as a child. You never had the money to afford formal lessons and you can’t read sheet music. But you want to play. You want to be able to finger those black and white keys and play a song. There’s that says you can’t. You just need to learn how to play piano by ear.

Playing any instrument by ear requires patience and the ability to match the sounds you hear with the sounds you play. With the piano, you cannot be afraid to test this out. The keys give you an instant result just by pressing them. If you were to play them in order, you would hear a pattern. Sometimes it won’t sound right. When that happens, try pressing some of the black keys. What you playing is a scale.

Place your hands on the keys and get ready to play piano by ear. Start with something simply, like ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’. Hum the tune in your head and then try to match it with the keys beneath your fingers. It may take you a few times, but have patience. It is not that difficult and you will feel very rewarded once you have done it. Know that learning to play any instrument by ear is a process of trial and error.

Some people teach themselves how to play piano by ear by chording. A chord is a group of three notes that sound good together. It sounds right. There are times when chording is all that is needed. It’s more of an accompaniment than the actual melody of the song. If you are patient enough, you can learn to chord the right notes with your left hands and play the melody with your right hand.

As you play piano by ear you will discover that hitting the key with different intensity makes the note soft or loud. Also, the pedal at your feet can sustain a note for a longer length of time. These are common techniques used by composers to give their music flavor. Listen to a piano concerto one day and notice the way the music rolls, loud to soft, long notes to short. These elements are in almost every form of music and they do have proper names.

Of course there is always the option for the more dedicated and serious student to go and buy a very basic piano music book. The books will have a copy of the piano keyboard in it with the keys marked. Theses keys correspond to the notes on the music scale. Don’t fret. The one thing anyone wanting to learn to play piano by ear needs to remember is to not be afraid to experiment. Unlike a stringed instrument, pianos won’t go out of tune easily. Try playing some scales and chords. And hum some simple tunes to get yourself started. Don’t worry about finger placement if you are playing for yourself, and above all, have fun.

How To Make Your Hands Independent When You Learn Piano.

Posted by admin on January 27th, 2009

Playing different things with right and left hands is one of the most difficult skills the beginner pianist has to learn. Still, this is the core of piano playing and so it is something to be mastered at an early stage.

I have known very intelligent adults despair to their piano teacher that they’ll ever get anywhere and I’ve known tiny little tots take to it like a duck to water. It’s one of those totally unfair situations when some brains seem to be set up right whilst others have the wiring right for most things but askew for piano playing!

There is no need for anyone to despair with piano lessons ‘though. Just follow the advice below and you will find it easier to learn to play piano well. Sometimes you may feel you are getting nowhere but, although improvement may be slow it will still be there if you persevere.

Consider these three steps to success.

First make sure the piece you are trying is Read the rest of this entry »

Use The Best Online Piano Course To Make Your Impossible Dream Possible

Posted by admin on January 20th, 2009

Learning to play the piano without years of expensive lessons used to be impossible. Traditional piano lessons use educational techniques developed over two hundred years ago, when modern formal secular mass education started. For its intended purpose – to teach children reading, writing, arithmetics and prepare them for higher education – formal education works well. More than two hundred years old now, the teaching techniques and curriculum of modern education has advanced greatly. But its core problem remains – it is designed to the lowest common denominator of both teacher and student.

In other words, it equips the least capable teachers so that they can do their jobs of teaching the majority of students. Formal education teaches students broad-based academic knowledge, and is not designed to quickly teach narrow specific skills. Traditional piano training teaches you a lot of theory, making the assumption that you want to climb all the way to the top of the academic hill.

This is not the case for many of us. We do not want to become good enough to get a certificate and qualify to teach other students. We only want to learn enough to play the piano. We do not want to write our own music. We do not need to know why Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 21 "Elvira Madigan" is good, we only care that it sounds good and we want to be able to play it. For such a narrow purpose, the accelerated learning technologies developed during the Cold War is ideal.

These speed learning techniques were originally used to Read the rest of this entry »

Piano Lessons Online a Low Cost Win-Win for Students and Their Piano Teacher

Posted by admin on January 16th, 2009

Its tough trying to maintain an active lifestyle and wanting to learn piano at the same time. Not only that, but piano lessons with good teachers are expensive and its often really difficult to schedule lessons.

So to fit it all in to a filled-to-the-gills schedule more and more students have turned to taking their piano lessons on the Internet.

Theyve proven that not only is it doable, but that they have the brains and musical ability to improve and learn, and they have a blast at the same time. And the online instruction is even more personal than one would expect.

In classic piano lessons, students and teachers vie for a certain number of limited time slots. With the Internet, students download workbooks and view videos anytime they want.

Edward Weiss, who has been teaching improvisational piano conventionally for more than 14 years, has now moved his piano instructions almost totally online. His growing online practice helps piano students, mostly young and mature adults, of a wide range of experience from all over the world. His web site

has been growing and getting bigger and bigger. It now contains over 100 individual lessons.

Personal music lessons with a good piano instructor usually run $25 to $35 per half hour session. Online music lessons with Weiss cost $19 a month.

My students move a computer or a wireless laptop right next to their piano, he explains. With the Internet, students just click on the piano lessons they want to take and work their way through the instructions. They practice on their own for the most part. Then when they have a question, they email me.

Good musical training is good musical training, says Weiss. Its just that nowadays, people can get more and more of it online. It doesnt matter where we are anymore. We just get together virtually.

In fact, some of the training is more personal and easier to receive, because we have access to each other so readily and theres no travel involved.

No matter where my students are, they can reach me. We interact more frequently than if we are in a traditional conventional setting.

It provides a lot more flexibility for students and for me. I help more students than ever using the Internet than I could even hope to teach with conventional lessons, says Edward Weiss. Students can get every bit of personal one on one attention than they can get in person, and they can do it from anywhere.

According to Weiss, and more and more will undoubtedly agree, the future of music instruction is on the Internet.

A Google video demonstration of Weiss giving a piano lesson – Lesson 20: “Reflections in Water" is available for free. Students learn how to use open position chords in the Key of C to create a quiet, reflective mood.

Edward Weiss, who is located San Diego, California is a pianist/ composer who specializes in helping students learn how to play piano in the New Age style for over 14 years. He works with students in private, in groups, and now over the internet. For more information visit quiescencemusic.com or call 619-717-6094
