Can I use a keyboard to learn Piano?

I am interested in learning to play the piano but cant afford one right now. Is a keyboard an adequate substitute? If so, is there a certain type or something specific I should look for when shopping for one?

   Yes you can. In the long run you'll probably need a piano, but a keyboard can be used as a replacement for quite a while. If you're going to buy a keyboard, you have to make sure that the keys are weighted. For the number of keys, anywhere in between 61 – 88 keys. You can play anything from the Baroque and classical era on 61 keys, and that's more than a lifetime of music, however if you want to play things from the romantic era or anything after that time, you will need 88 keys.

   When I was growing up, I couldn't afford a piano either. I had a keyboard, but when I got the chance I would go to a practice room at my school and practice all I could there. If you can, get a weighted, 88-key, keyboard. If you can though, work on getting a piano. Go to craigslist.com. You may get lucky and someone is giving away one. That's how my mother in law got hers. Good luck
