      Play Piano – Preparing to Practice

      When the practicing “blahs” strike, you just need an attitude adjustment. You don’t have to sweat blood to practice well. You don’t even have to think of it as work, or duty, or even something that you ought to do.

      Stop a minute and think about it. You like music, and you want to play some special piece that really means something to you. You want it to sound through you – right through your fingertips.

      Okay? Well, you practice it to fulfill that desire, not to frustrate it.

      Pause here and ask yourself some questions:

      What if you could look at a piece of music for the first time, and play it correctly straight off, just as fine as you please?

      How would you feel about practicing then?

      Or, what if you were practicing for the Olympic swim meet next year, and felt deep down that you had a chance? How would you feel then about the training? Would you plunge into it each morning?

      What if you were interrupted at a good point in yesterday’s practicing? What if you had just about broken through a tough spot when you had to stop? Would you want to get back to it today as soon as possible?

      You answer those questions, honestly, for yourself. There are ways to say “YES!” every day.

      But, first, you’ve got to stop blaming yourself. You don’t have to be perfect every time. You don’t have to be the best player, today. And you don’t have to listen to what other people say about your playing – people who are only half listening, and don’t care the way you do.

      Put all that out of your mind. What matters is your desire to play as well as possible.

      Just start with playing – one note after another, and keep going. As the Chinese say, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first, step.” And, if the very first step leads to the first slip, be glad for it. You can’t, repeat, cannot learn without mistakes!

      Now, start to think more personally about your instrument.

      The piano, like the guitar, is a “touchy” instrument. Touch it, and you both produce and color its tones, like a potter molding clay. Think of the keys, all gleaming white, as the “skin” of the piano; you can either please them or hurt them. Stroke them, and the sound will come out mellow and purring. Poke them, and the sound will either “bark” sharply or woodenly “thud.”

      Stop thinking of yourself as playing “on” or “at” the piano. Rather, think of the instrument as an extension of your own body. When an artificial leg is fitted to an amputee, he is then taught to walk with it. Gradually, it feels more natural – more like his own leg walking. The French call the keys “les touches,” or “touch-points” – as if the keys, not you, were doing the feeling.

      Every musician wants to personalize this instrument. Take a look at the vocalist who hugs his guitar, or without a guitar, woos his microphone, or, without a microphone, simply woos the audience?

      Every musician seeks to make his instrument an extension of his own body, the tool he or she needs to put across the strong feelings he as for the music.

      Nadia Boulanger, one of the greatest teachers, put it best: “Don’t speak to me of talent; speak to me of desire.”

      Go to the piano or keyboard not to reproduce a piece, but to experiment with your best way to bring out what is there. There is no one right way to play a piece – no matter how loudly some people protest that there is.

      Artists in fact, vary greatly, and audiences return again and again to hear the same piece, as played by pianist X or pianist Y. You simply cannot play a piece twice the same way. Try it!

      Here’s how to practice an exercise or a song:

      Six quietly, upright and relaxed Hear the music in your head: hear it better than life. Sense its movement and pulse rolling through you, turning and adjusting your own pulse, you are the prime “instrument” of this music – sitting there alert, tuned by silence, vibrating to is rhythm, lending it your own life entirely.

      As you feel the music filling you, heart and soul, you will know that it is getting ready to be born.

      When it has stirred you, lift your hands to the keyboard. This is the reason you wanted to play in the first place: to bring alive what has already moved you. And, suddenly, by centering your focus, you’ve turned practicing from a duty into an attraction.

      If you want to learn the piano online you need to know how to overcome some “sticking points” before you will succeed. The main sticking points are your negative beliefs, unrealistic expectations and not getting enough support. By the time you have read this article you will know how to overcome all of them.

      The first thing to overcome is your own negative beliefs about what’s possible. If you are new to the piano you will tell yourself, as you start to learn, that you just won’t be able to master it. Everyone goes through that stage. You might say to yourself that you are too old to learn. Or you might tell yourself that it’s just too difficult or “not for you”. You have to watch for these negative beliefs because if you do not they will defeat you and you will give up on your dream of playing the piano. The way to overcome negative beliefs is to search for things that contradict them. If you think you are too old look for people who have learnt at an older age. If you think it’s too difficult search for people who have had more obstacles to overcome. Subject your negative beliefs to proper scrutiny and they will fall away.

      The opposite of a negative belief is an overly positive belief or unrealistic expectations. If you are going to learn the piano online and you have a wholly unrealistic view of how you will progress you will become disappointed and will probably give up the piano very quickly. The way to overcome this sticking point is to set yourself realistic goals at the outset. By way of example set yourself the goal of learning a few simple songs well during the first month of learning the piano online.

      Once you’ve overcome your negative beliefs and set realistic expectations the last sticking point is getting the right level of support. You need support from those around you but you also need the right level of support from the online course you are taking. If you are going to succeed and learn the piano online you need to make sure that the course you have chosen provides you will email support and enough support within the resources you download to get you through the difficult stages.

      Once you have overcome these three sticking points you will be well down the road to success and you will learn the piano online.

      Learn How To Play Piano

      When you meet someone who knows how to play the piano, you would usually admire that individual. Possibly in the back of your mind, you also want to play this very pretty instrument. Lucky, you are able to learn how to play piano if you really want to.

      All skillful piano performers started from scratch. Not one individual was born with the knowledge of playing the piano. It’s never too late to learn how to play the piano. Young or old, if you want to play like the performers, you have to start right away.

      If you’re having trouble training yourself with your practice hours, here are some notes to ponder upon.

      Note # 1

      Make a daily scheme for practice and adopt with it. Be determined to stick to your plan. It is a must to condition yourself into practicing everyday so that your body will get used to the routine. At first, it may be tedious and boring but as you get on with taking the essentials, it becomes more amusing hearing the way you play.

      Note # 2

      Your piano must be put in a place that you won’t feel cluttered. Your music room must be free from anything that might trouble you like a radio or anything noisy. This enables you to concentrate when practicing. Also, make sure that there is proper lighting where your piano is placed. But remember that your piano must not be exposed to extreme sunlight for this might destroy some sensitive parts of your piano.

      Note # 3

      Forever warm up. Exercise your fingers with some simple notes then proceed to the hard ones. If you have no idea on how to warm up those fingers, ask someone who knows. An exercise must let your fingers stretch to reach some keys that are hard to reach. This will become helpful when playing fast paced notes and music. Don’t let your hands touch a key while it still feels stiff and rusty.

      Note # 4

      Review the past lessons learned before starting a lesson. This would be the following thing after warming up. If you have not complete the music yesterday, retrieve what you played then continue it. Better yet, start the whole thing to be able to follow.

      Note # 5

      Make your practice as goal-oriented as possible. A goal will make you more centred and concentrated because you have something to be achieved. To complete a goal will make you feel satisfied and accomplished.

      Forever maintain a positive attitude when practising. When you plan to play the piano without anyone to guide you, simply retrieve all the lessons that your tutor has taught you. Do not give up that easily when it has went hard. If you are being stressed, relief for a while. Give yourself time to rest.

      Try to work out a technique with every practice for it to come out natural and unique in your own way.

      This series of articles will help everyone who is learning to play the piano to attain that all-important part of the whole process of learning the piano, the ability to produce a good tone.

      It is necessary for the piano student to observe, and learn fully and precisely, as much of the mechanism of the piano as possible. It is only with careful study that a scientific knowledge of piano-touch can be attained. No piano student, however musically gifted they may be, can, in these days of “higher development,” afford to depend solely on the aesthetic side of his nature for the cultivation of his technique.

      If the technical study of the piano is approached in a spirit of calm inquiry, there is no reason why a study of the piano should not brace the mental system of the student, and do him as much good as would a careful study of grammar or geometry. And although this technical study is not sufficient of itself to make an artist, still the benefit derived from it will be always at hand to help the piano student unravel many difficulties which otherwise could cause a great deal of frustration, and would slow the learners progress.

      Of all musical instruments, the piano is perhaps the one, which a player can, quite easily misuse. The pianist has an almost unlimited freedom of movement for the body, arms, and hands; and the instrument imposes few conditions to its use. Therefore, it is necessary for the student to have a knowledge

      (1) of the correct use of his limbs,

      (2) of how to use correctly the mechanism peculiar to the piano, and

      (3) of how to adapt the one exactly to the other, before he can acquire an unexaggerated style of playing.

      It is unfortunately a commonly accepted idea that the piano, like the organ, is dependent for its quality of tone on the manufacturer alone, and that “Broadwood” or “Bechstein,” as the case may be, is wholly responsible for the kind of sound, which the player produces. And parallel with this opinion runs the generally accepted one that touch, or, the method of producing correct tone, cannot be taught, and is entirely a “gift.”

      When a great pianist plays, there is a beauty, delicacy, and richness of tone in what the piano player produces. This is usually thought to piano players touch being born with the player. Or to the fact that his fingers have been for so many years never off the keys, or to his large hands, or long fingers. Or to some other qualification possessed only by pianists of similar rank, and quite out of the reach of less gifted players.

      In examining the question of how one may learn to produce good tone, the following fact should offer a foundation for observation and reasoning, that is to say, that both the great artist and the poor player have one common field of action in the external mechanism of the piano, that is, its Keyboard.

      The great artist and the poor player may both be seen at work, and notes may therefore be taken of their different methods of using the means given them for the production of tone. The hands of both obey the same primary laws of muscular movement and the piano, is a keyboard instrument that will reproduce accurately what is being played on it, good or bad, and no respecter of who is playing. It is simply the acted-upon, and not the agent.

      When therefore the great artist is seen to use his hands differently from the poor player. The reason of the different character of the tone must partly be that the method of touching the instrument is different. Part of the reason lies, of course, in the fact, that the great piano player starts with a greater degree of musical talent than the poor piano player does.

      But as this article discusses not so much musical feeling itself, but rather the expressing of musical feeling, and as it is very evident that the great piano player does use the hand differently from the poor piano player.

      Exploring jazz Piano

      The professional jazz pianist is expected to know the styles and techniques developed through the history of jazz. What sets the jazz musician apart is the need for excellent improvisational skills in melody and harmony.

      The element of improvisation in jazz piano gives the pianist a sense of freedom of expression not found with other styles of music. Though the pianist must know “the rules,” those rules can easily be broken in an artistic and creative way. How the jazz pianist applies or breaks those rules becomes part of their own personal style.

      Jazz Piano Styles

      When you discover all the different styles of jazz piano, one can begin to appreciate the variations in rhythm and discern between the different feelings that each type can offer a listener.

      Below are brief introductions of the four main jazz styles and how they relate to piano jazz as we have come to know it and love it today.

      Early Jazz

      Piano has been an important part of jazz music since its beginning in the 1890’s. Before jazz became widespread, Ragtime enjoyed popularity as one of the first music crazes of the modern era.

      During this Ragtime era, piano music was the one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the U.S. The ragtime craze helped to fuel the sales of pianos, especially in the North.

      Jazz developed as various styles of African-American music mixed and mingled in New Orleans in the first decades of the 20th century. Blues, spirituals, ragtime, band music, and European music melted together to form what is called America’s first genuine original art form. What separates Ragtime from jazz is the fact that jazz is not notated, and ragtime doesn’t “swing”.

      Storyville was an area of New Orleans where some local places showcased small bands, and some that would just have a solo pianist. As World War I broke out, Storyville was reported as a threat to the health of or soldiers, and closed it was down. Without this venue, many of those musicians looking for work elsewhere. Jazz was soon off and running, the craze was ablaze.

      Stride Piano

      In the 20’s, a new jazz piano style started to emerge. Stride had the bass/chord left hand pattern of ragtime, but the swing of jazz in the right h

      and. The pianist performed all the elements of a band: the rhythm, the bass, the chords and the melody, usually at a frenzied pace.

      The style evolved from the solo pianist’s desire to keep the party going. The outlets these parties provided were the main source of entertainment for many Americans.

      Swing Piano

      In the swing era, which lasted from the twenties into the forties, sometimes the pianist played only sporadically and sparsely, adding an extra “frill” on top of the arrangement. At the time, swing was the most popular music in America.

      Be Bop and Hard Bop

      The Be-Bop era evolved as a reaction to the tightly controlled arranged sound of the swing bands. There was a major change in the evolution of jazz piano. The pianist didn’t have to keep playing a steady rhythmic beat, but could now convey the rhythm and harmony by just using parts of the chords. The melodies became more angular and soon became featured in New York City, mostly in the clubs on 52nd St.

      In the mid fifties, jazz saw new styles emerging. The pianists could use all of the techniques in jazz to develop a style, including elements of stride, swing blues and gospel.

      Moving Forward

      Since the early 60’s, jazz piano has taken on many facets. Jazz has become wide open to interpretation, and the contemporary jazz pianist is able to grasp inspiration from many avenues.

      Yes, jazz piano does pull at the heartstrings of many of us. I suggest you take some time each day to find your “jazz ear” so that you are able to feel the passion that jazz will add to your lifestyle.

      With such an array of styles to emulate, and have fun with, many inspired listeners soon develop a passion to learn how to play the piano for themselves. There is nothing more satisfying than feeling the jazz beneath your fingertips.

      The cost of a jazz pianist is not about the expenditure money for lessons, it’s more about the time that you spend dedicating yourself to learning jazz piano, and having fun on your journey. The benefits are too great to go into on this brief article. Let’s just say, it’s definitely worth it all.
