Black Keys: If you want to learn piano online, the first things you must learn are the keys. Black keys come in groups of two and groups of three. This means something that will be described next.
White Keys: The white key right before the first black key in the two group is the C note. From then on, a total of 7 notes are played, in a repeating pattern.

Hands: Your hands are your tools. Treat them well, because if you lose them, you no longer play. A good rule of thumb is that for the right side of the keyboard; only use your right hand. Left side uses only the left hand to play.

Now, you want to have fun. Try to just play a few random notes. Don’t worry how it sounds or the fact that you aren’t playing a song; just get yourself accustomed to the keyboard. Remember to also use the black keys in your practice session, as many people forget those keys completely. Also remember to keep the left hand on the left side and right on right.

Hand eye coordination is another huge factor in learning piano online. Your eyes might see the keys you want to hit, but your hands must hit them correctly. This may not happen all the time, so practice a simple song with just one hand until you have perfected it. Then, try a slightly harder song, and see if you can keep up your hand-eye coordination, using the same or different hands.

Playing different things with right and left hands is one of the most difficult skills the beginner pianist has to learn. Still, this is the core of piano playing and so it is something to be mastered at an early stage.

I have known very intelligent adults despair to their piano teacher that they’ll ever get anywhere and I’ve known tiny little tots take to it like a duck to water. It’s one of those totally unfair situations when some brains seem to be set up right whilst others have the wiring right for most things but askew for piano playing!

There is no need for anyone to despair with piano lessons ‘though. Just follow the advice below and you will find it easier to learn to play piano well. Sometimes you may feel you are getting nowhere but, although improvement may be slow it will still be there if you persevere.

Consider these three steps to success.

First make sure the piece you are trying is

easy enough for you. Don’t try to run before you can walk. Adults often think they can race ahead past the first pieces in the book. Take it steady.

Remember that it’s not just about training your fingers for the piano keyboard, but your brain has to cope with many, many new commands. So, take your time and take each piece steadily. Think about the hare and tortoise and when you start to play the piano, slow really is the best policy.

Second, make sure you are confident about playing each hand separately. So well in fact that you would not be put off playing by any minor distractions.

You should be able to play the left hand and sing the melody of the right hand at the same time or perhaps you might like to try playing the right hand and talking to someone at the same time. In other words, it must become part of your subconscious, so that your hands will just carry on, wherever your mind may be!

Lastly, be sure to take everything slowly at first. When practicing independent hands take a very slow tempo. Watch your fingers playing the notes and know that you are in control.

As soon as you start to play with both hands, cut the speed in half (way slower than you think you could play it or that you know it should go) and be very, very precise over how you play the notes. Watch the fingers playing the notes and be aware that you’re in control of every movement they make (you are, aren’t you?)!

By following these simple steps, you will learn piano very quickly. For some people it will happen almost instantaneously whilst others will have to struggle, but if you persevere and keep repeating these steps the hands will eventually seem to know instinctively which piano notes to play and when.

You want to be able to finger those black and white keys and play a song. There’s that says you can’t. You just need to learn how to play piano by ear.

Playing any instrument by ear requires patience and the ability to match the sounds you hear with the sounds you play. With the piano, you cannot be afraid to test this out. The keys give you an instant result just by pressing them. If you were to play them in order, you would hear a pattern. Sometimes it won’t sound right. When that happens, try pressing some of the black keys. What you playing is a scale.

Place your hands on the keys and get ready to play piano by ear. Start with something simply, like ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’. Hum the tune in your head and then try to match it with the keys beneath your fingers. It may take you a few times, but have patience. It is not that difficult and you will feel very rewarded once you have done it. Know that learning to play any instrument by ear is a process of trial and error.

Some people teach themselves how to play piano by ear by chording. A chord is a group of three notes that sound good together. It sounds right. There are times when chording is all that is needed. It’s more of an accompaniment than the actual melody of the song. If you are patient enough, you can learn to chord the right notes with your left hands and play the melody with your right hand.

As you play piano by ear you will discover that hitting the key with different intensity makes the note soft or loud. Also, the pedal at your feet can sustain a note for a longer length of time. These are common techniques used by composers to give their music flavor. Listen to a piano concerto one day and notice the way the music rolls, loud to soft, long notes to short. These elements are in almost every form of music and they do have proper names.

Of course there is always the option for the more dedicated and serious student to go and buy a very basic piano music book. The books will have a copy of the piano keyboard in it with the keys marked. Theses keys correspond to the notes on the music scale. Don’t fret. The one thing anyone wanting to learn to play piano by ear needs to remember is to not be afraid to experiment. Unlike a stringed instrument, pianos won’t go out of tune easily. Try playing some scales and chords. And hum some simple tunes to get yourself started. Don’t worry about finger placement if you are playing for yourself, and above all, have fun.
