What would people say if they knew? Your kids would probably laugh at you. Your buddies would most likely think you’re gay. And your wife? Why, she’d probably suspect you’re having an affair. After all, any change in behavior, any deviation in patterns is always fodder for suspicion. Why would a middle-aged man suddenly want to learn how to play a piano?
But that’s just it. This yearning to learn how to play a piano – it’s not sudden. You’ve harbored it for years, nurtured it throughout several career shifts and neighborhood moves. You’ve wanted to learn how to play a piano long before your eldest went to college.
Now, you’re 54 and for the first time in your life, you can’t quash this longing anymore. You want to learn how to play a piano, and you want to learn now.
The good news is that learning to play the piano isn’t very hard at all these days, what with the many classes offered online – among them Rocket Piano. The downside is that no matter how simplified the initial lessons may be, some elements of piano would always remain technical. Operating the piano pedal, for example, is not as simple as merely bearing down on it. You have to understand what it’s for and what it does.
Typically, pianos have what is called a soft pedal on the left and a damper pedal on the right. What is each pedal for? The damper pedal lifts the dampers, an action that sends the strings that are struck vibrating. The soft pedal, meanwhile, shifts the hammers so that each hammer strikes one less string than it normally does. Other pianos have a sostenuto pedal, which lifts the dampers from the strings selected by the player.
Indeed, there are many things about learning piano that may be technical. This shouldn’t get in the way of fulfilling your dream, though.
